Thomas T Tapmeier

Dr Thomas Tapmeier is a Senior Research Fellow and Group Leader at Monash University. He studied Human Biology in Marburg, Germany, and specialised in mouse models of immune related disease in his PhD at KCL, London. Thomas moved to the University of Oxford to study cancer immunology and joined the field of women’s health after investigating novel biomarkers of early lesions in breast cancer. Thomas won academic and industry grants >AU$2 million and established himself as a leading investigator in Women’s Health, with several projects as Senior Scientist and Project Lead within the Oxford/Bayer Alliance for Women’s Health (with Bayer AG, Germany) at the Endometriosis Care and Research Centre of the Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health (NDWRH), University of Oxford. One of these resulted in the first instance of isolating extracellular vesicles (EVs) directly from peritoneal fluid, which led him to pursue subsequent biomarker studies. Thomas is a named contributor to patents, authored numerous papers and set up a long-term prospective study into the biology of uterine fibroids and endometriosis at Oxford (FENOX, ISRCTN13560263). Thomas retains a Visiting Fellowship at Oxford and joined Monash University in August 2020 to lead a program of research in uterine biology, endometriosis, uterine stem (progenitor) cells, exosomes, and the development of novel therapies and diagnostics. He is supported by grants from Endometriosis Australia, from the Epworth Medical Foundation and the Julia Argyrou Endometriosis Centre at Epworth HealthCare, Victoria, and from the Monash School of Clinical Sciences, Melbourne.
